Cathedral-nesting bees showcase Panama City’s 19th-century environment.

Roughly 120 clusters of orchid bee nests were discovered in Panama, during restoration work on a local cathedral. The finding is particularly interesting as the nests hail from the 19th century, offering researchers a unique look at how local ecosystems evolved over time.

The cathedral in question is the Catedral Basílica Santa María la Antigua de Panamá, also known as the Sacred Heart Cathedral, in Panama City. Work on this place of worship began in 1688, and it has gone through several rounds of restoration work since then. Luckily for us, a group of bees has been with the cathedral throughout this journey. Around 120 clusters of their nests, hailing from the 19th century, were discovered during recent restoration work on the cathedral’s altarpiece.

Marriott International has announced the launch of its newest property in Panama. The new Residence Inn Panama City is set in the capital’s Punta Paitilla neighborhood.

The 144-room property is the first Residence Inn in Panama, joining a local portfolio that includes a W Hotel, a JW Marriott, a Marriott and an Autograph Collection property. (The W hotel is Marriott’s most recent addition to Panama, having opened its doors in 2018).

“Panama City is a key market for longer-stay travel and the perfect place for Residence Inn by Marriott,” said said Carlos Roque, General Manager of Residence Inn Panama City. “Located just a few minutes from historic Casco Viejo, travelers will have the option to enjoy restaurants, shops and nightlife creating work-life balance and a true home away from home.”

Drought ups risks for Panama Canal.

Panama Canal authority ACP will launch more temporary measures to reduce vessel transit and increase fees to pass through the waterway.

The new measures will begin on February 15 and remain active until ACP comes up with a long-term solution to the declining water levels at Gatún Lake – the canal’s main source of water.

“[ACP] has a couple of alternatives that have already been proposed a few years ago. However, none have been able to get going,” Eduardo Zegarra Méndez, a senior researcher at analysis and development group Grade, told BNamericas.
