Panama Canal Introduces GHG Calculator for Canal Vessel Traffic.

Ships using the Panama Canal will be able to see how doing so might reduce their carbon footprint thanks to the launch of an emissions calculator by the Panama Canal Authority.

The emissions tool works out vessel greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) based the available technology covering most of the global fleet and includes a calculation of total emissions safe when choosing the canal over other routes, according to maritime news provider Lloyd’s List.

“The calculator will be housed within the Panama Canal’s Green Connection Environmental Recognition Program and will advance the programme’s work to promote emissions reductions by recognizing vessels that comply with the highest environmental performance standards,” the authority was quoted as saying.

A Thriving Business and an Active Social Life in Panama.

“Bird heaven.” It’s often the first phrase that comes to mind when I’m in the El Valle region, just two hours by car from Panama City. On the western edge of the popular crater town is Potosí—a green oasis dotted with palms and flowering shrubs. Here, four little cabins sit nestled in the countryside, their hammocks inviting you to sink in and relax.

The longer you sit, the more likely you are to see colorful birds and other rainforest creatures, including sloths, iguanas, hummingbirds, and toucans. More than 50 species have been spotted on these grounds alone.

The four cabins belong to expat Dennis Wenthold and his wife of 48 years, Mireya. Though Mireya is Panamanian, the two met when they were both students at the University of Northern Iowa. After a brief stint in Panama in the 1980s, they pursued careers in education in Florida, where they stayed for over 20 years. But they remained eager to return to Panama when the time came to retire.

Watch this amazing time-lapse showing how ships get through the Panama Canal.

A video released from the US Coast Guard shows how one of its vessels travels through the Panama Canal. The Canal is a complex system that utilizes an artificial lake to help ships traverse between the Continental divide. Following is a transcript of the video.

The Panama Canal is an engineering marvel. About 14,000 ships use it every year. The canal is about 48 miles long. It functions as a waterway between North and South America. The canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans

Before the canal, ships had to sail 13,000 miles around the tip of South America An artificial lake across Panama connects the oceans. The Gatun Lake is 85 feet above sea level. How do the ships get raised and lowered?

The canal has a water lock system that acts like a massive elevator. When ships enter the locks, they’re raised by water from the lake. Each lock raises the ships until they’re 85 feet above sea level. They then travel across Gatun Lake.

5 Things to Know About “Fiestas Patrias” in Panama

If you live in Panama, or have ever visited Panama in November, you’ll know that this is the most special month for the country. November marks the season of the “Fiestas Patrias” or “Patriotic Holidays” in English. Officially, there are five national holidays in Panama in November, each marking either a famous battle for independence, or declared independence from Spain, and later Colombia.

Though five holidays may seem like a lot, it’s actually more, culturally, as many of these holidays are piggybacked with “puentes” (bridge holidays) that connect a Friday or Monday if the holiday falls on a weekend. So, if you’re in Panama in November, you’re going to want to know these 5 things:
