Panama Extradites Former Mexican Governor Accused of Corruption

A former state governor for Mexico’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) was extradited on Thursday from Panama to Mexico, where he faces corruption charges, Mexico’s attorney general’s office and secretary of external relations said in a statement.

Roberto Borge, who governed the touristy state of Quintana Roo from 2010 to 2016, was taken under strict security from the offices of Panama’s national police to an air force base, where he boarded a Mexican plane, local television footage showed.

Mexican prosecutors accuse Borge of using funds obtained illegally, embezzlement and abuse of public office. Borge has denied the allegations.

South Korea holds Panama oil tanker suspected of trading with North

South Korea says it is inspecting a Panama-flagged oil tanker suspected of evading international sanctions by trading with North Korea.

An official from South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the 5,100-ton Koti was being held at Pyeongtaek-Dangjin port on the country’s west coast. She did not elaborate on the specific activities crew members were suspected of.

The revelation comes days after South Korea said it was holding a Hong Kong-flagged ship and crew members over the transfer of petroleum products to a North Korean vessel in international waters in October.

Ship-to-ship trade with North Korea at sea is prohibited under UN sanctions adopted on September 11.

Panama’s new canal and the Midwest

ore than a year ago, a supersized Panama Canal welcomed a modern generation of gargantuan ships. That would seem irrelevant to many of us in Chicago and the Midwest. Except:

This metropolis, this region, thrives on global trade — the export of what our people manufacture and grow, the import of goods that stock our stores and component parts for much that’s built here. So when a single construction project reshuffles how stuff glides around the planet, a disproportionate share of the impact will fall on this region’s trade-sensitive economy.

So far, Chicagoans and Midwesterners, so good. Retrofitting the canal for the 21st century was a huge and risky bet. The early evidence suggests it’s paying off for just about everyone. And with the healthy global economy driving markets for all manner of goods, there’s a strong chance an investment that cost this region next to nothing will deliver dividends here for decades to come.
