Panama’s switch from Taipei to Beijing could be a model for others, president says

Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela said his country’s decision to shift diplomatic ties from Taipei to Beijing could be a model for other countries but would not affect its relations with Washington.

In Beijing on a week-long trip to foster Chinese links with Panama and the rest of Latin America, Varela said on Monday that he hoped his trip would not only underline Panama’s support for Beijing’s “one-China” policy, but also signal that Panama welcomed China’s growing presence in the United States’ backyard.

“We think we have made the right decision to establish ties with China and we have been very transparent throughout the process,” he said to a small group of reporters.

“Undoubtedly, our decision would serve as a model for other countries to follow – which is that other countries will follow our example of supporting the one-China policy.

Panama is on pace for record drug seizures this year, and the president has blamed Colombia’s cocaine boom.

Panama is on track to hit a record level of illegal narcotics seizures this year after authorities over the weekend seized about 2 metric tons of cocaine near the Central American country’s border with Colombia, officials said on Monday.

The total drug confiscations in full-year 2017 are expected to surpass the previous annual record of 72 metric tons confiscated last year, Security Minister Alexis Bethancourt told reporters, adding that the uptick is due to better coordination among local law enforcement agencies as well as help from “friendly countries.”

The weekend drug bust was made in the border province of Darien on a boat from Colombia, the national border agency SENAFRONT said at a press conference.

How to Enjoy Panama’s San Blas Islands

Caribbean islands have always been the places of magic in the hearts and imagination of traveler, or would-be travelers all over the world. For Panama, the Caribbean is also something special, as it hosts half of the country’s coastline, and has a large variety of cultural heritage and historic influence. Amongst the most sought after places to visit on the Caribbean side of Panama are the San Blas Islands (or Guna Yala in their native name).

San Blas is an archipelago that has around 400 small islands that hug the eastern Caribbean coast of Panama, all the way to the Colombian border. San Blas is protected indigenous territory, and is populated nearly exclusively by the Kuna tribe.

Although it’s semi-autonomous indigenous territory, San Blas has opened up to some incredible (and culturally conscious) tourist opportunities. It’s a place to go if you want to be off the grid, in crystal blue waters, and with a culture and customs as rich and fascinating as any in the hemisphere.
